2002 Campaign Report

Two members of the Institute were elected to major political offices on November 5. The Republican Attorney General of Texas, John Cornyn, a former member of that state’s Supreme Court, was elected to the United States Senate, while Arizona Attorney General Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, was elected Governor of Arizona. Another ALI member, Democrat Bill McBride, a member of the Tampa bar, failed in his effort to unseat Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Mr. McBride had earlier earned the right to oppose Governor Bush by defeating former United States Attorney General Janet Reno, also an ALI member, in Florida’s Democratic primary.
