Case Citations to The Restatement of the Law
(formerly Restatement in the Courts)
The Restatement in the Courts was conceived as a working tool to supplement the Restatement of the Law by providing easy access to court decisions that cite the Restatement. Citation paragraphs, listed by section within each Restatement, are digests of all those decisions by state courts (mostly appellate) and federal courts reported to the Institute by West Publishing Company.
The Restatement in the Courts was first published in 1945 and was updated by periodic hardbound supplements through 1976. Because all Restatement case citations have been carried over to the Appendix Volumes and Pocket Parts of the individual Restatements, it is no longer necessary to retain the hardbound Restatement in the Courts Supplements, and they have gone out of print.
Restatement Case Citations Cumulative Annual
Pocket Parts and Soft-Cover Supplements
Through 1976, case citations to all Restatements were published together periodically in a hardbound Supplement. In 1977 there was a change in format. Beginning with the 1977 Pocket Parts, separate annual Supplements for each Restatement have been published. These are cumulative and are in the form of: (1) Pocket Parts to be inserted in the backs of appropriate Restatement or Appendix Volumes; (2) soft-cover Supplements to be placed next to the appropriate Restatement Appendix Volume. Instructions on the title pages and in running footnotes in the Pocket Parts and Supplements advise readers which volumes to consult for earlier citations so that a thorough search of all cases citing a particular section can be made.
Interim Case Citations
This semiannual service is to be used in conjunction with the current cumulative annual Pocket Parts or Supplements and is intended to provide subscribers with Restatement citations more recent than those covered in the current Pocket Parts. The cover page of each Interim Case Citations pamphlet indicates which set of cumulative annual Pocket Parts or Supplements it is intended to update, and it advises whether previous Interim Citations pamphlets should be retained or discarded. The Interim Citations pamphlets also contain citations to ongoing Institute projects that are still in Tentative Draft form.
