Henry J. Friendly Medal: John G. Roberts, Jr.

Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr. receives ALI’s Henry J. Friendly Medal at the 2023 Annual Meeting. The medal was presented by Associate Justice Elena Kagan. Introductory remarks are provided by ALI President David F. Levi.

 

Distinguished Service Award: Roberta Cooper Ramo 

ALI President Emerita Roberta Cooper Ramo of Modrall Sperling is presented with the Distinguished Service Award by ALI Director Diane P. Wood of the U.S. District Court for the Seventh Circuit. John Minor Wisdom Award: Margaret H. Marshall and Mary M. Schroeder 

The Wisdom Award was presented to Margaret H. Marshall of Choate Hall & Stewart LLP and Mary M. Schroeder of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit by Wallace B. Danielle Allen of Harvard University and David Brooks of The New York Times are joined by David M. Rubenstein of The Carlyle Group for a discussion on the state of democracy in the United States.

 
Unexampled Courage: Michelle Childs Interviews Author Richard Gergel 

J. Michelle Childs of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit interviews Richard M. Gergel of the U.S. District of South Carolina about his book, Unexampled Courage. The book describes the racial awakening of President Truman and J. Waties Waring of the U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina, and traces their influential roles in changing the course of America’s civil rights history.

Social Media and Democracy 

Mary H. Murguia of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit moderates a discussion on social media and democracy with speakers Cindy Cohn of Electronic Frontier Foundation, Nita A. Farahany of Duke University School of Law, and Steven Feldstein of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

 
The American Law Institute: A Centennial History 

In celebration of ALI’s first 100 years, a volume of essays titled The American Law Institute: A Centennial History has been produced exploring ALI’s founding, examining some of the Institute’s most influential projects, and contemplating adoption and criticism of our work so far.

In this program, editors Andrew S. Gold of Brooklyn Law School and Robert W. Gordon of Stanford Law School and Yale Law School were joined by chapter authors Richard R.W. Brooks of NYU School of Law, Deborah A. DeMott of Duke University School of Law, and G. Edward White of UVA School of Law for a discussion on the book. The panel looked back on what the Institute has accomplished in its first century.

 

Role of Technology in Dispute Resolution and Access to Justice

Moderator David Freeman Engstrom of Stanford Law School was joined by panelists Bridget Mary McCormack of American Arbitration Association International Centre for Dispute Resolution, Colin Rule of Mediate.com and ODR.com, and Rebecca L. Sandefur of Arizona State University on the role of technology in dispute resolution and access to justice.
