In Memoriam: Janet Reno

ALI member, Janet W. Reno, former U.S. Attorney General, passed away on October 7. She was 78.

Born in Miami, Florida, she began her career at the firm Brigham and Brigham and later moved on to a junior partnership at Lewis and Reno before joining the staff of the Judiciary Committee of the Florida House of Representatives in 1971. In 1978 she was appointed as State Attorney for Dade County. President Bill Clinton appointed her U.S. Attorney General in 1993, making her the first woman to hold the position.

She earned her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her J.D. from Harvard Law School.
