Patricia Guerrero Nominated Chief Justice of California Supreme Court

California Governor Gavin Newson has nominated Patricia Guerrero to serve as the next chief justice of the California Supreme Court, following the completion of Tani Cantil-Sakauye’s term as chief justice on January 2, 2023.

“I am humbled by this nomination to lead our state’s Supreme Court and thank the Governor for entrusting me with this honor,” said Guerrero in the announcement. “If confirmed, I look forward to continuing the strides the Court has made under Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye to expand equal access to justice and create a fairer justice system for all Californians.”

Guerrero previously served on the California Fourth District Court of Appeal, Division One from 2017 until 2022 when she was nominated to the California Supreme Court. She is the first Latina to serve on the California Supreme Court and will be the first Latina to serve as chief justice, if confirmed.
