Frequently Asked Questions

Please note: The 2024 Annual Meeting is taking place in San Francisco; all times listed are in Pacific Time, unless otherwise indicated.

What does the registration fee cover?

The registration fee for the meeting is $200. This fee, which partially defrays the ALI’s costs of hosting the meeting, includes access to all project and special sessions held in the Grand Ballroom (May 20-22) and the special program Shortlisted scheduled for May 19 at 2:00 p.m.

Registrants have the option to purchase tickets to special events taking place at the Annual Meeting. Tickets may be purchased via the registration website (once registration opens), or at the on-site Annual Meeting registration desk (Italian Room Foyer at the Westin St. Francis). Advance registration is strongly recommended for each event as space is limited.

Can I register more than one person to attend the meeting?

Members and project participants who plan to attend the project sessions must register individually for the Annual Meeting. Members may also purchase special event tickets for fellow members and social guests while registering (or on-site). See next question for nonmember guests.

Can nonmembers attend the Meeting?

Yes, members may invite nonmember colleagues to attend the Meeting and related events. Nonmembers must register in advance.  For more information, please contact ALI’s Membership Department at membership@ali.org or 215-243-1624/1639

How do I download the Annual Meeting App?

A Meeting App will be available for download. Instructions and details will be emailed in April.

Is financial assistance available to attend the Meeting?

To reduce barriers to participation and ensure diversity of thought and experience in our project discussions, ALI offers financial assistance to members who are judges and public-sector lawyers to offset the costs of attendance. Eligible members will receive an email with details and a link to apply within a week of registering for the Meeting.

Please contact the Membership Department by email to membership@ali.org or by phone to (215) 243-1624 for more information.

When does online registration close?

Online registration closes on May 10, 2024, 5:00 p.m. Eastern.

What are the on-site registration desk hours?

Sunday, May 19, 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Monday, May 20, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday, May 21, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 22, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (or until Meeting adjourns)

Will the Meeting be livestreamed? Can I attend virtually?

No portion of the Annual Meeting will be live streamed. There is no virtual-attendance option.

Where can I pick up my badge on site?

You should pick up your badge at the ALI registration desk (Italian Room Foyer). You must pick up your badge before entering the Ballroom and wear it for all Meeting sessions and events.

Why are there colored dots on some badges?

We use a green dot on a badge, together with a green lanyard, to indicate that the wearer is a newly elected member of the Institute, and a red dot to designate those attending an Annual Meeting for the first time. Keep an eye out for these members, so you can welcome them to ALI and to the Meeting!

Officers and members of the Council are designated by a blue dot on a badge—don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to them.

Are there any special events for new members?

Yes. There is a Welcome Dinner for New Members and First-Time Attendees on Sunday, May 19, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at John’s Grill. This is an invitation-only event. New members should register to attend as part of the online registration process. This event is an excellent opportunity to get to know fellow new members and first-time attendees before the Annual Meeting begins. It will feature a brief presentation for members attending their first Annual Meeting, covering topics of basic protocols and ALI traditions.

On Monday, May 20, ALI will host a Members Luncheon Welcoming the Class of 2023 at the Westin St. Francis.  The luncheon will feature a discussion about our new Constitutional Torts project between ALI Director Judge Diane P. Wood and Pamela S. Karlan of Stanford Law School. Members of the Class of 2023 will receive a complimentary ticket.

How can I find information on the status of the projects being presented at the Meeting?

Visit the Projects (www.ali.org/projects) section of our main website for more information on the projects on the Meeting agenda.

Can members submit comments on Meeting drafts in advance of the Meeting?

Yes. In addition to comments and suggestions made from the floor at the Meeting, written comments on Annual Meeting drafts are welcome.

Is CLE credit available?

Yes. For a $150 administrative fee, CLE credit is available for attendance at the project sessions at the Annual Meeting. In addition, a program by ALI CLE on Sunday, May 19, offers one hour of ethics credits. The tuition for the program is $175 for ALI members (and project Advisers) and $195 for all others. Advanced registration is required.

Will there be wireless access at the Meeting?

Yes. Free wireless access will be available in the ballroom.

What is the dress code for the Meeting and related events?

The dress code is business attire. The Annual Dinner is business or evening attire.

Can I ship my Meeting materials home at the conclusion of the Meeting?

There is a FedEx Office Print & Ship Center in the Westin St. Francis. Business hours and other details are available on the FedEx website: https://local.fedex.com/en-us/ca/san-francisco/office-1193.

How do I cancel my registration?

Registration cancellations must be made by May 10, 2024, and are subject to a $50 administrative fee. No refunds will be provided for requests made after that date.
