S.I. Strong is Professor of Law at Emory University, having previously servied as Professor of Comparative and Private International Law at the University of Sydney in Australia and the Manley O. Hudson Professor of Law at the University of Missouri School of Law. She has also taught jurisprudence and British constitutional, contract and tort law at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and international commercial arbitration at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
Professor Strong specializes in public and private international law, comparative law (particularly with respect to procedural and constitutional matters) and jurisprudence. She has had over 130 books, articles and other works published in Europe, Asia and the Americas, and her scholarship has been cited as authority by U.S. courts and international arbitral tribunals. Her research, which has been translated into Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese, has also won accolades from a variety of national and international organizations.
Prior to entering academia full time, Professor Strong worked as a dual-qualified practitioner (U.S.-U.K.) in the New York and London offices of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and as Counsel at Baker & McKenzie LLP in Chicago. During her years in practice, she handled complex commercial disputes involving both private parties and state and other public entities in U.S. and English courts. She also represented clients in bilateral and multilateral arbitrations seated in a wide variety of jurisdictions. As counsel, she worked on one of the largest ICC arbitrations in history and handled arbitral matters proceeding under the auspices of the PCA, the ICC, the ICDR, the LCIA and the AAA, as well as ad hoc proceedings under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules.
Professor Strong is actively involved in international lawmaking in a variety of capacities. Not only does she work with the U.S. State Department’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law, she also represents non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at meetings of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and acts as an expert assessor for the European Union Directorate General-Justice.
Over the years, Professor Strong has served as a U.S. Supreme Court Fellow in Washington, D.C., the Henry G. Schermers Fellow at The Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law in The Netherlands, and a Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge in England. In addition to membership in the ALI, Professor Strong is a Fellow of the European Law Institute (ELI).
Professor Strong received a Ph.D. in law from the University of Cambridge, where she won the Yorke Prize for outstanding doctoral dissertation; a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford; a J.D. from Duke University School of Law; a Master of Professional Writing degree from the University of Southern California; and a B.A. in English literature from the University of California, Davis. While at Duke, she served as Editor in Chief of the Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law. She is admitted to practice in state and federal courts in New York, Illinois and Missouri as well as the United States Supreme Court, and as a solicitor in England and Wales as well as Ireland
