Betsy Cavendish is general counsel at the Executive Office of the Mayor of the District of Columbia, with approximately 20 client agencies.  She serves as Ethics Counsel to EOM, Chairs the Office of Administrative Hearings Advisory Committe, and is on the Tobacco Settlement Financing Corporation.  She's an off-board member of the American Constitution Society's finance committee, and is a former Board member of the Alliance for Justice. 

Prior to joining the District government in January, 2015, she was President of the Appleseed network, which comprised 16 centers in the U.S. and Mexico working to advance systemic changes for justice.  Her career also included many years of service at NARAL Pro-Choice America and the United States Department of Justice, both in Civil Frauds and at the Office of Legal Counsel.  She taught briefly at the University of Illinois College of Law and worked on the Hill before law school.  She clerked on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, for Judge Gerhard A. Gesell, during the trial of Oliver L. North.
