Brent E. Newton practices law in Maryland and Texas.  His practice includes criminal defense, civil litigation, and immigration law.  He handles cases in federal and state courts, both at trial and on appeal.  From 2009 until 2019, he was the deputy director of the United States Sentencing Commission in Washington, D.C.  Before working at the Commission, he was a public defender for nearly two decades.  He also has served as an adjunct law professor at American University in Washington, D.C. since 2009, and as a practitioner-in-residence at Penn State-Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, PA, since 2021.  From 2000-09, he was a lecturer at the University of Houston Law Center.  He regularly teaches Criminal Procedure I & II, Civil Procedure, Remedies, and Legal Ethics.  He is the author of three books and two dozen law review articles and book chapters.
