Matt Sawchak is the Solicitor General of North Carolina. He represents North Carolina in the U.S. Supreme Court and oversees the state’s civil appellate litigation.
Before beginning public service, Matt was a senior partner at Ellis & Winters LLP in Raleigh, North Carolina. There he focused his practice on appeals, antitrust, and other complex litigation.
Matt is a state-bar-certified specialist in appellate practice. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers.
He is the incoming chairman of the editorial board of the Antitrust Law Journal. He is the practitioner in residence at Campbell Law School, where he teaches civil procedure and antitrust.
Matt graduated with honors from Harvard College and Duke Law School. He was the editor-in-chief of the Duke Law Journal.
After law school, Matt clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas during Justice Thomas’s tenure on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Matt also clerked in the Office of the Solicitor General of the United States.
Matt sings with the North Carolina Master Chorale and the North Carolina Opera.
