D.C. Judges Learn About SCOTUS Opinions

A recent article in the Legal Times, observed judges from federal and local courts in D.C. when they were told of the U.S. Supreme Courts same-sex marriage and Affordable Care Act decisions.  The judges were attending the D.C. Circuit’s biennial judicial conference in Philadelphia when D.C. Circuit Chief Judge Merrick Garland announced the decisions.

ALI Secretary Paul L. Friedman and Ketanji Brown Jackson, both judges on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, were both in attendance and noted in the article. Of particular interest to Judge Friedman was the case challenging a provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). On the ruling, Judge Friedman, who had presided over one of the lawsuits challenging the provision of that was at issue in the case, told the reporter that he was “pleased to be affirmed,” and declined to comment further.
