Judge Philip A. Brimmer, Adviser on Principles of the Law, Data Privacy, has been selected to receive the prestigious 2016 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Tenth Circuit. The award will be presented at the Tenth Circuit Judicial Conference at the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs by the Honorable Deanell Reece Tacha.
Judge Brimmer is a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. He joined the court in 2008 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. He served previously as Chief of the Special Prosecutions Section in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, where he had worked since 2001. Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he served in the Denver District Attorney’s Office from 1994 to 2001, eventually acting as Chief Deputy District Attorney. Prior to his career in the public sector, Judge Brimmer was in private practice with the Denver office of Kirkland & Ellis from 1987 to 1994.
He served on the founding committee for the Colorado Intellectual Property Inn of Court and continues to serve on its executive board. He chairs the U.S. District Court Security Committee and serves on the board of directors of the Historical Society of the Tenth Judicial Circuit.
A graduate of Harvard College, Judge Brimmer served as senior editor of the Harvard International Review. He earned his J.D. from Yale Law School, where he served on the board of directors of the Moot Court of Appeals. He then worked as a law clerk for Judge Zita L. Weinshienk, U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, for 18 months.
A native of Wyoming, he worked as an intern in the Washington, DC, office of Wyoming Senator Malcolm Wallop while in college. He was preceded on the bench by his father, Clarence Addison Brimmer, Jr., who was a judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming from 1975 to 2013.
