October 13, 2016

ALI member Daniel O. Bernstine, President of the Law School Admission Council since 2007, passed away on September 24 at his home in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He was 69.

His legal career began as a staff attorney with the U.S. Department of Labor. After serving as general counsel at Howard University, he transitioned to professor and later interim dean at Howard University School of Law. He also served as president of Portland State University and dean of University of Wisconsin Law School.

Dean Margaret Raymond of UW Law School said of Mr. Bernstine, “[His] leadership made a powerful mark on this law school, and the warmth and affection with which he is regarded among our alumni and colleagues continues to this day. He will be profoundly missed here.”

Mr. Bernstine earned his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law, and LL.M. from the University of Wisconsin Law School.
