In Memoriam: Howard J. Aibel

March 13, 2018

Howard J. Aibel passed away on March 9. He was 88.

Mr. Aibel was executive vice president and chief legal officer of International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation for nearly 30 years. While at ITT, he developed a deep commitment to alternative dispute resolution (ADR). After his tenure at ITT, Mr. Aibel continued to specialize in ADR as a partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf and with the American Arbitration Association, where he served as chairman of the executive committee and the board of directors from 1992 to 1998.

He was vice chair of the board of the Westport Country Playhouse, which last month announced it was renaming its entire campus after him following his donation of $3 million for theater operations and to establish an endowment.

An ALI member since 1951, Mr. Aibel served on ALI’s Member Consultative Group for Restatement of the Law Third, The Law Governing Lawyers.
