Robert H. Klonoff, the Jordan D. Schnitzer Professor of Law at Lewis & Clark Law School, has been named the recipient of this year’s Oregon State Bar Award of Merit. This honor, the highest bestowed by the bar, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the bench, the bar, and the community, while exemplifying the highest standards of professionalism.

Klonoff served as the Dean of Lewis & Clark Law School from 2007 to 2014. He is a co-author of the renowned Wright & Miller treatise, Federal Practice and Procedure, with sole responsibility for the three volumes on class actions. He has also authored numerous textbooks and scholarly articles on class actions and federal multidistrict litigation.

A member of ALI, Klonoff currently serves on the ALI Council and chairs the Development Committee. He is also the chair of the inaugural event, MDL in Motion: Evolving Practices, Emerging Leaders, and Reform, an ALI CLE program hosted by ALI in partnership with the Center on Civil Justice at NYU School of Law. The event will take place on Friday, September 12, 2025, at NYU School of Law, with virtual attendance options available.

Klonoff will be honored at the Celebrating Oregon Lawyers event on Wednesday, October 22, in Portland.

Current Challenges Facing the Judiciary

Ten years ago, Duke Law School began publishing Judicature. Among the articles published in that first Duke edition was a lecture titled “Grand Challenges, Grand Ideas,” by David F. Levi, then-dean of Duke Law School. He highlighted five key issues of keen concern to the judiciary: access to justice; justice at a reasonable cost; an independent, transparent judiciary; criminal justice reform; and maintaining a sense of purpose.

Traynor on Liberty, Law, and Democracy

In his essay "Liberty, Law, and Democracy: Are There Grounds for Realistic Optimism?" Michael Traynor, former President of The American Law Institute, reflects on the challenges facing American democracy amid political polarization and institutional strain. He examines threats to the balance between liberty and law, citing dysfunction across the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, while drawing on historical context and recent scholarship to frame these concerns.
