The initial funding of the first Principles project came from a Pew Memorial Trust grant in the amount of $426,000, made in 1979. A subsequent grant in the amount of $500,000 was made in 1985 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. For the final eight years of the project, the Institute used its own general resources, an amount exceeding $700,000.
