Benjamin Cardozo

Benjamin Nathan Cardozo (1870–1938) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1932–1938). Previous to his appointment to the Court, he served on the New York Court of Appeals as a judge from 1914 to 1932 and chief judge from 1926 until his was appointed to the Court. Cardozo is remembered for his significant influence on the development of American common law and his vivid writing style. He influenced a development in American appellate judging toward greater involvement with public policy and a modernization of legal principles.
