Afra Afsharipour will present “Comparative Corporate Governance and the Pathology of Controlling Shareholder Power” at the University of Kansas on Nov. 12.
Afsharipour is the John D. Ayer Professor of Law and director of the Center for Business Law and Society at the University of California, Davis, School of Law.
“Professor Afsharipour researches and writes in the areas of comparative corporate law and corporate governance," said Vera Korzun, professor of law at KU, who helped arrange Afsharipour’s visit. “Her scholarly interests place her among the exclusive ranks of comparative private law scholars, who engage in the comparative analysis of private law, including contracts, torts, property and corporate law. In addition to regularly presenting and publishing on comparative law, throughout her distinguished career she has been engaged in professional organizations in the field, in particular the American Society of Comparative Law, where she has been a strong supporter of junior comparative law scholars and the work of the ASCL Younger Comparativists Committee.”
Afsharipour is an elected member of the American Law Institute. She was named a research member of the European Corporate Governance Institute in 2023 and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation in 2019. She has held leadership positions in the Association of American Law Schools and the American Society of Comparative Law. She received her juris doctor from Columbia Law School.
The Casad lecture series is named in honor of the late Professor Emeritus Robert Casad, who was on the faculty of the KU School of Law from 1959 to 1997. Casad was internationally known for his scholarship in comparative civil procedure.
