serve as Chief Justice and is only the second justice in the court’s history elected to serve three terms in that role. She clerked for the Alaska Supreme Court in 1976-77 and served

as Chief Public Defender for Alaska from 1981-88 by appointment of the Governor. In 1988, she was appointed to the superior court bench in Anchorage where she served as

deputy presiding judge and training judge until her appointment to the Supreme Court.

Since retirement from active status on the Alaska Supreme Court in 2016, Dana has opened a private mediation practice and has mediated over 600 complex civil matters. She is member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.

Dana served as co-chair of the Advisory Committee of the Center for Judicial Ethics at the National Center for State Courts and on the board of directors and as second vice-

president of the Conference of Chief Justices. She is a past President of the National Association of Women Judges and founded two of its signature outreach programs: Success Inside and Out, a reentry and mentoring program for women prisoners, and

Mentor Jet, a speed-mentoring program connecting students with judges and lawyers.

Throughout her career, Dana has mentored many students and young attorneys with a particular focus on opening pathways to the legal profession and the bench, and she has

been recognized nationally for her civic education and outreach efforts. She has received the Sandra Day O’Connor Award for the Advancement of Civics Education from the National Center for State Courts, as well as NAWJ’s Justice Joan Dempsey Klein Honoree of the Year and Justice Vaino Spencer Leadership Award. She is a YWCA

Alaska Woman of Achievement, a member of the Anchorage ATHENA Society, and a charter member of the Alaska Women’s Hall of Fame.
