Chagares
Michael A. Chagares is Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and has been a Circuit Judge since April 2006. He is a member of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the governing body of the federal judiciary, and was appointed by Chief Justice Roberts to the Executive Committee of the Judicial Conference. He served as a member and later Chair of the federal Appellate Rules Advisory Committee. Before taking the bench, Chief Judge Chagares was a partner in the law firm of Cole Schotz, P.A., and served as a Hearing Officer for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. From 1990 to 2004, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Newark, becoming Chief of the Civil Division in 1999. Chief Judge Chagares served as a law clerk to the Honorable Morton I. Greenberg, U.S.C.J., and has been an Adjunct Professor at Seton Hall Law School since 1991. He has published various articles and is a co-author of the book New Jersey Federal Civil Procedure. Chief Judge Chagares has lectured abroad to foreign judges, officials, and others about the U.S. justice system, judicial independence, and the rule of law.
