Matthew L. Garcia earned his bachelor’s degree (1999) and J.D. (2005) from the University of New Mexico. He also obtained a M.P.P. from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government (2003) and completed studies as a Fulbright Scholar at the Helsinki School of Economics (1999-2000).
Prior to taking the bench, Judge Garcia served as General Counsel and Chief of Staff for Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. He also spent several years as a civil litigator representing plaintiffs in civil rights matters, torts, and class actions.
President Joseph Biden nominated Garcia in July 2022, and he was confirmed by the Senate the following year.
