Ben currently serves as Oregon's Deputy Attorney General, overseeing the legal work of the state's Department of Justice.  Before his appointment to that position in 2025, Ben was Oregon's Solicitor General for nearly a decade.  He also is a member of the Oregon Law Commission.

Ben has spent his whole career in government.  After graduating from Yale Law School, where he was Executive Editor of the Yale Law Journal, Ben clerked for Judge David Ebel on the Tenth Circuit.  He worked as an appellate attorney for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission before serving in the New York Attorney General's office as Assistant Solicitor General and then Deputy Solicitor General.  Ben joined the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board as an administrative judge and later was appointed Chief Administrative Judge and Regional Director of the Board's western regional office.

Ben has argued more than 100 appeals in federal and state courts, covering subjects ranging from criminal law to free speech to international trade.  When he is not editing briefs, Ben most likely will be found singing with a community choir, wandering Oregon's mountains, or solving a crossword puzzle.
