Chief Justice Roberts Warns Against Escalating Personal Attacks on Judiciary

March 18, 2026

At a recent event at  Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy, Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts Jr. issued a pointed warning about the growing trend of personal attacks on judges, emphasizing that such rhetoric is “dangerous” and must stop. His remarks come amid a broader climate of heightened criticism directed at courts and individual jurists following high-profile rulings.

Chief Justice Roberts drew a clear distinction between legitimate critique of judicial decisions and attacks aimed at judges personally. When criticism shifts from legal reasoning to individual hostility, he cautioned, it risks undermining both judicial independence and the safety of those serving on the bench.

The comments followed recent public criticism of federal judges by President Donald J. Trump and others after rulings adverse to administration positions. While the Chief Justice did not name any individual, the timing of his remarks reflects growing concern within the legal community about the tone and intensity of such attacks.

ALI’s 1st Vice President Lee H. Rosenthal of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas joined Roberts in conversation at the event and underscored the importance of institutional support for the judiciary.

Chief Justice Roberts also pointed to a rise in threats against judges and noted ongoing efforts to strengthen judicial security. His remarks echo concerns raised in prior statements about the effect of intimidation and misinformation on the rule of law.

For the legal profession, the moment highlights an enduring tension: robust public debate over court decisions remains essential, but preserving respect for the judiciary as an independent institution is equally critical.
