Robert H. Sitkoff of Harvard Law School, recently delivered a “Last Lecture” to graduating students reflecting on the central role of private law in sustaining the rule of law.
He emphasized that areas such as contracts, property, and torts quietly structure everyday relationships and provide mechanisms for resolving disputes without resort to self-help. In doing so, Sitkoff underscored the responsibility of lawyers not only to serve their clients, but also to support the legal system’s function as a stabilizing force in society.
His remarks highlight the often underappreciated importance of private law in maintaining trust, order, and the peaceful resolution of conflict.
