Robert H. Mundheim of the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School has received the University in Exile Award from the New School for Social Research. The award was presented on May 14 in New York City in advance of the University’s 90th annual commencement ceremony.
The award honors individuals whose lives and work reflect the mission of the University in Exile, an initiative established in 1933 to provide refuge for scholars fleeing persecution in Europe. The recognition carries special significance for Mundheim, whose family escaped Nazi Germany when he was a child.
Over a career spanning academia, government service, private practice, and corporate leadership, Mundheim has made lasting contributions to legal education and the legal profession. As dean of Penn Law from 1982 to 1989, he strengthened the school’s commitment to public service and helped guide a period of institutional growth. He later served as General Counsel of the U.S. Department of the Treasury and held senior leadership positions in both the legal and financial sectors.
An ALI member since 1969, Mundheim served on ALI’s Council for 27 years and five ALI committees, including as Chair of the Special Committee on Governance. He currently serves as an Adviser on the Restatement of the Law, Corporate Governance project, and has served as an Adviser on several works, including Restatement of the Law, Charitable Nonprofit Organizations; Restatement of the Law Third, The Law Governing Lawyers; Principles of the Law, Compliance & Enforcement for Organizations; and Principles of Corporate Governance. He also served on the Members Consultative Group for the Principles of the Law of Government Ethics.
His numerous professional honors include ALI’s Distinguished Service Award, which he received in recognition of his contributions to the Institute and the law. His career has been marked by a commitment to public service, professional responsibility, and legal education.
